Wisdom Insight from Proverbs Chapter 30 “God the Promise Keeper”
2. Ministry Resource – The Serving Leader
3. Wisdom for Leadership - Learn How To Weep, Learn How to Ask for Help

Wisdom Insight from Proverbs: God the Promise Keeper
“These are the solemn words of Agur son of Jakeh: “God is not with me, God is not with me, and I am helpless. I am more like an animal than a man; I do not have the sense a man should have. I have never learned any wisdom, and I know nothing at all about God. Who has ever mastered heavenly knowledge? Who has ever caught the wind in his hand? Or wrapped up water in a piece of cloth? Or fixed the boundaries of the earth? Who is he, if you know? Who is his son? God keeps every promise he makes. He is like a shield for all who seek his protection.”
Proverbs 30:1-5 TEV

It is such a relief to know that I do not need to know everything that God knows. I don’t have to be God. God is God. All I have to know is that he keeps his promises. He keeps all his promises. He is my protector, my shield, and my rock. All I know is that God is good all the time. All the time, God is good. He is my Promise Keeper.

Ministry Resource: The Serving Leader
A donor and friend of BUA sent me a book entitled The Serving Leader by Ken Jennings and John Stahl-Wert. It is one of the best books I have read on leadership. The Jesus message is in the book and works along two story lines and the book is packed with excellent leadership principles. I would like to share some of the ideas over the next few weeks in this section of Ministry Resource. The third big idea is “Building on Strengths.” That means the leader determines the strengths of the people in her organization and seeks to build on those strengths. The organization is usually really good at something. What is it in your organization that nobody does as well as you?

Wisdom for Leadership: Learn How to Weep, Learn How to Ask for Help
Proverbs 6:8-9 says “The Lord hears my weeping; he listens to my cry for help.” Do you have the capacity to ask for help? Do you allow anyone to see you cry? Before anyone knows my reason for grief, the Lord hears my cry. One characteristic of a leader is the willingness to ask for help and a willingness to be human and transparent. People tend to know when you are real, when you are genuine and they appreciate seeing you for who you really are. When was the last time you wept and asked for help?

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Wisdom for Leadership - Living for an Audience of One

Wisdom Insight from Proverbs: The Imago Dei in Us
“If you get more stubborn every time you are corrected, one day you will be crushed and never recover. Show me a righteous ruler and I will show you a happy people. Show me a wicked ruler and I will show you a miserable people. If you appreciate wisdom, your partners will be proud of you. It is a foolish waste to spend money on prostitutes. When the king is concerned with justice, the nation will be strong, but when he is only concerned with money, he will ruin his country. If you flatter your friends, you set a trap for yourself.”
Proverbs 29:1-5 TEV

Being stubborn about the right things can actually be an asset to your leadership. However, being just plain stubborn about most things, especially corrective guidance, can bring you to a dead end. Spend your efforts going after righteousness, wisdom, stewardship, and justice. People around you will be blessed as you pursue these Kingdom virtues.

The second big idea is “Raising the Bar.” That means the leader raises the expectations for herself and her team. Leadership happens when teams produce results not processes. Leaders get greatness out of their teams by expecting it.

Wisdom for Leadership: Living for an Audience of One
Proverbs 5:21 says “The Lord sees everything you do. Wherever you go, he is watching.” To live for an audience of one keeps us accountable. When we really believe that God is there, he is present, he is listening, he is watching, he is aware of our every thought, deed, action, attitude, and relationship, we tend to think in a unique way about the way we live. It is only when we delete this idea from our minds and from our reality that we developed bad habits that steal our freedom as leaders. Listen, we are all accountable to somebody. The leader that lives that way learns how to serve.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Wisdom for Leadership - Get All The Wisdom You Can Get

Wisdom Insight from Proverbs: The Imago Dei in Us
“The wicked run when no one is chasing them, but an honest person is as brave as a lion. When a nation sins, it will have one ruler after another. But a nation will be strong and endure when it has intelligent, sensible leaders. Someone in authority who oppresses poor people is like a driving rain that destroys the crops. If you have no regard for the law, you are on the side of the wicked; but if you obey it, you are against them. Evil people do not know what justice is, but those who worship the Lord understand it well.”
Proverbs 28:1-5 TEV

What we need in our government at the local, state, and national level is brave leadership that is concerned with the oppression of the poor, respect for the law of the land, and a love for justice. The values at the core of this kind of leadership are honesty, integrity, and truth. Habits build character and character builds leadership. Leaders tend to rise to the expectations followers have for them. Are you expecting honesty, integrity, and truth from your leaders? Are they concerned with alleviating oppression for those who are less fortunate? Do they hold the law in high esteem? Do they consistently work for justice in the lives of those in our communities?

Ministry Resource: The Serving Leader
A donor and friend of BUA sent me a book entitled The Serving Leader by Ken Jennings and John Stahl-Wert. It is one of the best books I have read on leadership. The Jesus message is in the book and works along two story lines and the book is packed with excellent leadership principles. I would like to share some of the ideas over the next few weeks in this section of Ministry Resource. The first big idea is the principle of Upending the Pyramid. Jennings and Stahl-Wert recommend turning the traditional organizational pyramid on its end. What would your work be like if you saw the people that serve under your leadership as your most important customers? Your goal would be to jump into the trenches and unleash their gifts, abilities, and talents and aim them toward the mission of your organization.

Wisdom for Leadership: Get All the Wisdom You Can Get
Proverbs 4:7-8 says “Getting wisdom is the most important thing you can do. Whatever else you get, get insight. Love wisdom and she will make you great.” We find wisdom in the words of our friends, in books, in articles, in the words of our spouse, in the sermons our pastors preach, in the counsel of wise deacons, in the words of our children, in the Holy Scripture, and wise and trusted counselors. Wisdom is all around you. You just have to listen for it and build the capacity to hear. Leonard Sweet, in his book Summoned to Lead, calls it “sound leadership.”

Copyright 2006 Albert L. You don’t know what will happen between now and then. Let other people praise you – even strangers; never do it yourself. The weight of stone and sand is nothing compared to the trouble that stupidity can cause. Anger is cruel and destructive, but it is nothing compared to jealousy. Better to correct someone openly than to let him think you don’t care for him at all.”
Proverbs 27:1-5 TEV

Our only boasting is found in what Christ has done for us. Boasting, bragging, or tooting our own horn is foolishness. When I hear someone praising themselves in public in the presence of others, I wonder how deep their need is for attention. We do not serve an insufficient Christ. He gives us all the self-worth we need. The image of Christ in us does not require self-praise, anger, jealousy, and all the character flaws that flow from our hearts. Take the risk today and point your friends to Christ and his image in us.

Ministry Resource: The Making of A Leader: The Word Test
One of the best tools for developing leaders is Robert J. Clinton’s book entitled The Making of A Leader. The book is a reflection of Clinton’s leadership emergence theory. Clinton describes several tests that an emerging leader goes through in preparation for a future assignment. One of the tests is a “Word Check.” That is, can the emerging leader be trusted with the things of God? Does the emerging leader have the capacity to rightly divide God’s word? Can he or she be trusted with truth revealed to him or her in God’s word. Does the leader have the skills needed to study, interpret, and apply God’s word. God tends to use those who have this kind of capacity.

Wisdom for Leadership: Leading Change and Trusting the Lord
Proverbs 3: 5-6 says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way.” Leaders who participate in transforming organizations must rely on a wide variety of information and encouragement. When you have done due diligence regarding transforming an organization and you have as much information as possible, you come to the point where you have to trust the Lord and remember him in all you do. If the Lord is leading you, he will show you the right way.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Sanity Section - Leadership Ethics

Wisdom Insight from Proverbs: Managing Foolish People
“Praise for a fool is out of place, like snow in summer or rain at harvest time. Curses cannot hurt you unless you deserve them. They are like birds that fly by and never light. You have to whip a horse, you have to bridle a donkey, and you have to beat a fool. If you answer a silly question, you are just as silly as the person who asked it. Give a silly answer to a silly question, and the one who asked it will realize that he’s not as smart as he thinks.”
Proverbs 26:1-5 TEV

When was the last time you encountered a foolish person? A person who really needed more help than they realized? The Wisdom writer is trying to tell us that there are ways to deal with foolishness. We don’t have to give it the same time and effort as we would to reasonable people. We are not compelled to give serious consideration to foolish questions. This passage gives new meaning to the concept of “fool-proofing” yourself.

Ministry Resource: The Making of A Leader: The Obedience Test
One of the best tools for developing leaders is Robert J. Clinton’s book entitled The Making of A Leader. The book is a reflection of Clinton’s leadership emergence theory. Clinton describes several tests that an emerging leader goes through in preparation for a future assignment. One of the tests is an “Integrity Check.” That is, can the emerging leader be trusted with the things of God? Does the leader’s life project honesty and good character? Integrity comes form the word integer, a whole number. A person of with integrity lacks nothing and has a measure of wholeness about them. Have you found leaders around you who have integrity? I have found that when I find a person of consistent integrity, I have found a rare quality. If a person has integrity, I can teach them many skills. If they do not have integrity, it does not matter what their skills are for the job.

Wisdom for Leadership: Leadership Ethics
Proverbs 2:11-12 says that “Your insight and understanding will protect you and prevent you from doing the wrong thing. They will keep you away from people who stir up trouble by what they say.” A central quality for the character of a leader is ethical behavior. That is, knowing when something is wrong and knowing what is right. Principle-based leadership is possible when a leader has an ethical core, a point of reference. For the Christian leader, the ethical core should reflect the witness of Holy Scripture and the leadership of the Spirit of Christ. God’s wisdom provides a foundation for an ethical core. Seek God’s wisdom, insight, and understanding.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. We honor God for what he conceals; we honor kings for what they explain. You never know what a king is thinking; his thoughts are beyond us, like the heights of the sky or the depths of the ocean. Take the impurities out of silver and the artist can produce a thing of beauty. Keep evil advisers away from the king and his government will be known for justice.”
Proverbs 25:1-5 TEV

Leaders tend to be as good as their best advisers. Care must be taken to surround yourself with the best advisers available. They will make or break you. Who do you turn to for counsel? Who advises you on major decisions? Do you consistently see the character of God in their hearts? Do their words, actions, and attitudes resonate with God’s word and spirit?

Ministry Resource: The Making of A Leader: The Obedience Test
One of the best tools for developing leaders is Robert J. Clinton’s book entitled The Making of A Leader. The book is a reflection of Clinton’s leadership emergence theory. Clinton describes several tests that an emerging leader goes through in preparation for a future assignment. One of the tests is an “Obedience Check.” That is, does the emerging leader have the capacity and habit of obeying what God has revealed to him or her? Obedience involves submission of the will before God. It involves bending our knees. Have you found leaders around you who are willing to obey? I have attempted to obey the Spirit as he has led me to speak on Immigration Reform. See the Interview by the Wittenburg Door on BUA’s Website at www.bua.edu on the Front Page.

Wisdom for Leadership: Leading Requires Wisdom
Proverbs 1:6 says that “It is the Lord who gives wisdom; from him come knowledge and understanding.” A leader that is in tune with the Spirit of God and is led by the Spirit of God will benefit from the wisdom, understanding, and knowledge that comes from God. James 3:17 says that God’s wisdom is pure, peaceful, gentle, friendly, full of compassion, produces a harvest of good deeds, and is free from prejudice and jealousy. If you are going to lead, you need to get God’s wisdom.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Causing trouble is all they ever think about; every time they open their mouth someone is going to be hurt. Homes are built on the foundation of wisdom and understanding. Where there is knowledge, the rooms are furnished with valuable, beautiful things. Being wise is better than being strong; yes, knowledge is more important than strength.”
Proverbs 24:1-5 TEV

Wise people tend to be builders. They build lives, they build others, they build organizations, and they build the Kingdom of God where they encounter it. Evil people tend to destroy and if they build anything at all they tend to build sand-castles as a monument to themselves. Jesus said the person who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like the foolish person who built his/her house on the sand. Evil people build things that do not last. The construction materials wise people use are knowledge, wisdom, and understanding.

Ministry Resource: Developing Leaders Around You
One of the best tools for developing leaders is Robert J. Clinton’s book entitled The Making of A Leader. The book is a reflection of Clinton’s leadership emergence theory. The gold of this book is the leader development timeline that helps each emerging leader chart their progress through several phases of development. This tool helps the emerging leaders identify where they are and helps him or her be at peace about the place they are in today. I highly recommend this book to help you develop the leaders God has placed around you. In the coming weeks I will expand on this idea.

Wisdom for Leadership: Leaders are Learners
Proverbs 1:5 says that the Proverbs “can even add to the knowledge of the wise men and give guidance to the educated.” A leader expands his or her capacity to lead by expanding his or her capacity to learn. God’s wisdom can teach you how to live intelligently, how to be honest, just, and fair. I learned many of these things from my parents as a young boy only to find out later that they were drawing these principles of God’s word. My assumption each day is that I am going to learn something from a colleague, a student, a friend, my children, my spouse, my critics, and anyone God sends my way. My leadership grows as I remain teachable.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Sanity Section - Reading Widely

Wisdom Insight from Proverbs: A Good Reputation and Long Life
"When you sit down to eat with someone important, keep in mind who he is. If you have a big appetite, restrain yourself. Don't be greedy for the fine food he serves; he may be trying to trick you. Be wise enough not to wear yourself out trying to get rich. Your money can be gone in a flash, as if it had grown wings and flown away like an eagle."
Proverbs 23:1-5 TEV

Life is not made up of things and stuff. So it is wise to have a healthy attitude toward wealth and resources. Keeping our possessions, things we only manage temporarily, rather than our possessions keeping us helps us keep our priorities ordered with a view toward eternity. What are the possessions in your life that matter the most? Would you be able to live without them?

Ministry Resource: A Whole New Mind
This summer I met Daniel Pink, author of A Whole New Mind, at Andrews University during the annual Roundtable Conference in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Pink challenged me to think about the conceptual age we are now experience. The Conceptual Age will belong to those who are able to create, imagine, design, and configure new paradigms for the future. Perhaps the best leadership idea for your ministry will be to unearth the creative and imaginative resources in the minds and hearts of those around you.

Sanity Section: Reading Widely
One of the reasons I am in a doctoral program is that it helps me read widely on a variety of subjects. I am not recommending that you enroll in a doctoral program to force yourself to read. However, I have learned the benefit of reading books on subjects like theology, business, leadership, ethics, organizational development, research, education, and so on as well as the Bible. I find lots of illustrative material for my sermons this way. If I was a well-rounded reader I would also read classic literature as well. Read widely to stay wise. It helps you keep your sanity.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Sanity Section - Too Busy Not To Pray

Wisdom Insight from Proverbs: A Good Reputation and Long Life
“If you have to choose between a good reputation and great wealth, choose a good reputation. The rich and poor have this in common: the Lord made them both. Sensible people will see trouble coming and avoid it, but an unthinking person will walk right into it and regret it later. Obey the Lord, be humble, and you will get riches, honor, and a long life. If you love your life, stay away from the traps that catch the wicked along the way.”
Proverbs 22:1-5 TEV

A good reputation is probably the most valuable commodity we will ever own. A good reputation is built by consistent obedience, pervasive humility, sensibility, and wisdom. A good reputation and a long life is a blessing from the Lord. That is not to say we will not have critics or that we should ignore our critics. In fact, your toughest critic will usually have a kernel of truth embedded in difficult feedback. Listen to your critics. Give their words, however tough it is to hear them, some consideration and reflection. You may find that they will help you keep a stellar reputation.

Ministry Resource: The Overcoming Church
I found Seven Progress Reports on the early church in the book of Acts of the Apostles. I am using them for a two part sermon series called “The Overcoming Church.” Part One dealt with the Early Church overcoming Exclusivity (Acts 2:42-47), Disunity (Acts 6:7), and Persecution (Acts 9:31). Part Two deals with the Early Church overcoming Confusion (Acts 12:24), Conflict (Acts 16:5), Weakness (Acts 19:20), and Adversity (Acts 28:30-31). You may find it helpful to do a seven-week bible study or sermon series covering these topics. If you are interested at receiving the manuscript of these sermons electronically please email me at areyes@bua.edu .

Sanity Section: Journaling
I have recently re-read a book entitled Too Busy Not To Pray by Bill Hybels. I was reminded how I am so busy that I cannot afford to live a prayerless life. I need time with God to gain the insight, strength, courage, and stamina needed for each day’s challenges. One of the practices that Hybels recommends is the practice of journaling. Taking time to record your thoughts, your reflection, and your impression of what God is speaking to you on a daily or weekly basis. There is power in reflection. The leader that does not reflect leads with no point of reference to the past, no sense of review, and limited perspective on the future. Take time to pray. Reflect on God’s word. Write your impressions down. Review them when you need direction for the future!

Copyright 2006 Albert L. You may think that everything you do is right, but remember that the Lord judges your motives. Do what is right and fair; that pleases the Lord more than bringing him sacrifices. Wicked people are controlled by their conceit and arrogance, and this is sinful. Plan carefully and you will have plenty; if you act too quickly, you will never have enough.”
Proverbs 21:1-5 TEV

Doing what is right and fair comes easily to the person who is full of Christ’s word and led by this spirit. Paul said, “Let the word of Christ richly dwell in you.” I can hear the still small voice of Christ in my heart and mind when I am familiar with Christ’s words and actions. I know the moment I have done something that is inconsistent with the presence of Christ. In every relationship and in every circumstance, do what is right and fair. If you have done wrong you have an opportunity today to make things right. Pick up the phone, write a note, or make an appointment to right wrongs you are aware of.

Ministry Resource: Christian Community Development Association Conference
It is not too late to consider attending this conference to learn about ways to invest in your community through the establishment of a Community Development Association in your area. The Serving Leader: Five Powerful Actions That Will Transform Your Team, Your Business, and Your Community, San Francisco, California: Berrett-Koehler, Inc.) during some down time at Anna Maria Island. This is one of the best books on leadership I have read in a long time. What I really enjoyed about it was the story line that accompanied principles of leadership being taught. It is an easy read, enjoyable, and refreshing. I commend this book to you. A friend and donor of BUA recommended it to me. What a blessing!

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Fear an angry king as you would a growing lion; making him angry is suicide. Any fool can start arguments; the honorable thing is to stay out of them. A farmer too lazy to plow his fields at the right time will have nothing to harvest. A person’s thoughts are like water in a deep well, but someone with insight can draw them out.”
Proverbs 20:1-5 TEV

One of the fruits of the Spirit is self-control as described by the Apostle Paul in Galatians 5:22-23. Addiction to alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or anything that puts self-control out of reach erodes the best God has planned for you. We evidence self-control when our anger is properly managed, when we pursue productive conversations rather than pointless arguments, when we exhibit a strong and disciplined work ethic, and when we demonstrate insight in our relationships.

Ministry Resource: Back To School for New Leaders
As you consider the emerging leaders in your circle of influence, you may want to point them to resources available at BUA. I recently found a website that list several retreats locations for ministers that I wanted to share with you. Go to www.nazarenepastor.org and select “Clergy Retreat Information.” Most of these sites are provided at no cost to the minister. Make plans to come apart before you come apart.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Enthusiasm without knowledge is not good; impatience will get you into trouble. Some people ruin themselves by their own stupid actions and then blame the Lord. Rich people are always finding new friends, but the poor cannot keep the few they have. If you tell lies in court, you will be punished – there will be no escape.”
Proverbs 19:1-5 TEV

Understanding God’s will is not a mystery. You can find God’s will for your life through prayer, reading the Bible, seeking counsel from trusted friends, and listening for the voice of God around you. But don’t confuse uninformed and selfish decisions with God’s will and then blame God for the consequences you bear for the bad decisions you have made. Be patient, tell the truth to yourself, get knowledge, seek God’s kingdom first and everything else will fall into place.

Ministry Resource: Dallas Baptist University
I have really been impressed with the innovations in graduate studies at Dallas Baptist University. DBU has several online graduate programs that you can access with a computer, including the MA in Organizational Management and new degree programs you can access online as well. DBU recently introduced the PhD in Leadership. You may want to visit them at www.dbu.edu and look for graduate studies or online studies.

Sanity Section: Six More Months Till Christmas and 2007
We are about six months away from Christmas and New Years Day. Do you still remember what you hoped to accomplish this year? Now is a good time to review your plans for 2006 because it is almost over. What will be different about the second half of this year for you? If you only had six more months in the year, what would you try to get done? Who would you attempt to meet? What conversations would you need to have? What goals need to be met? What are the most important things in your life that need attention right now?

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Sanity Section – Planning for Sermons and Bible Studies

Wisdom Insight from Proverbs:
“People who do not get along with others are interested only in themselves; they will disagree with what everyone else knows is right. A fool does not care whether he understands a thing or not; all he wants to do is show how smart he is. Sin and shame go together. Lose your honor, and you will get scorn in its place. A person’s words can be a source of wisdom, deep as the ocean, fresh as the flowing stream. It is not right to favor the guilty and keep the innocent from receiving justice.”
Proverbs 18:1-5 TEV

”Plays well with others,” usually says that a person gets along with her or his peers. Have you met the person who does not seem to get along with others and works hard to make sure that everybody knows that he or she is always right and knows everything? I wish I could say I don’t know anyone like that. Insecurity, selfishness, jealousy, low self-worth, and basic foolishness keep these individuals from making a positive contribution to the Kingdom. Pray for them, confront them if you have relational credibility, and bless them as often as possible.

Ministry Resource: Worldconnex
One of the most exciting innovations in Global missions is WorldconneX, an organization that connects missional resources to the needs on the field. If you have ever wondered how you might connect to God’s redemptive purposes in this country or around the world, you may want to contact WorldconneX at www.worldconnex.org to learn more.

Sanity Section: Planning Ahead for Sermons and Bible Studies
Most of us are called upon with regularity to deliver a sermon, a talk, a Bible Study or a presentation that requires study, reflection, and preparation. None of us sets out from the beginning to produce less than excellent work. On the contrary, we want to do our best but we seldom seem to take time to plan adequately. If you are invited to speak more than once or provide a series of Bible Studies, it may be wise to block out a few days or a few afternoons to focus on that project alone. It may seem counter-intuitive with all you have going on but your quality will go through the roof if you plan to set some significant time aside to pray, to meditate, and to plan how you will deliver the message in your heart.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. A shrewd servant will gain authority over a master’s worthless son and receive a part of the inheritance. Gold and silver are tested by fire, and a person’s heart is tested by the Lord. Evil people listen to evil ideas, and liars listen to lies. If you make fun of poor people, you insult the God who made them. You will be punished if you take pleasure in someone’s misfortune.”
Proverbs 17:1-5 TEV

If you were to undergo a spiritual cardiac exam what would the chart read in terms of character? Character is one of four key ingredients in the kind of team members that advance our ministry. I look for character, competence, compliance, and community. Character that mirrors the heart of God is truthful, honest, pure, genuine, selfless, and servant oriented. What kind of character are you attracting to your team?

Ministry Resource: Liderazgo y Amistad
Few books have been written on the topic of leadership from an Hispanic perspective. It is currently published in Spanish only.

Sanity Section: Beside Still Waters
This month my family and I will spend about ten days at Beside Still Waters off the coast of Tampa, Florida on Ana Maria Island. You may think everything you do is right, but the Lord judges your motives. Ask the Lord to bless your plans, and you will be successful in carrying them out. Everything the Lord has made has its destiny; and the destiny of the wicked is destruction. The Lord hates everyone who is arrogant; he will never let them escape punishment.”
Proverbs 16:1-5 TEV

Planning with God’s redemptive activity in mind is good management of your life. Arrogance, on the other hand, is a false sense of pride, a pride whose motives are difficult to conceal. So make plans but plan according to God’s purposes and then ask him to bless your plans and to help you execute the plans you have labored over.

Ministry Resource: Bible Study Methods
Have you every wanted to learn how to study the bible and thought you had to go seminary to pick up those skills? Good news is on the way. Baptist University of the Americas is offering a course entitled Bible Study Methods this fall at the San Antonio campus. The course is a 16-week college credit level course that will provide you with the skills to study the bible. A one-time scholarship is available for those who have not previously studied at BUA. The student will be responsible for purchasing the book for the course and a registration fee. The scholarship and space in the course is available on a first come, first serve basis until the classes fill up. It is foolish to ignore what your father taught you; it is wise to accept his correction.”
Proverbs 15:1-5 TEV

Wise words come from wise people. The timing, selection, and application of words in relationships speak volumes regarding the character and wisdom of a person. We all know people that speak up just to be heard or to claim airspace but when you evaluate what they have said you find their words to be pretty empty with no substance. Make an effort to add value to conversations, to encourage those around you with kind words, and to be ready to provide a gentle answer.

Ministry Resource: Hispanic Singles Camp
This week I have the privilege of speaking at the annual Hispanic Singles Camp at Highland Lakes Retreat Center on July 7-9, 2006. Be honest and you show that you have reverence for the Lord; be dishonest and you show that you do not. A fool’s pride makes him talk too much; a wise man’s words protect him. Without any oxen to pull the plow your barn will be empty, but with them it will be full of grain. A reliable witness always tells the truth, but an unreliable one tells nothing but lies.”
Proverbs 14:1-5 TEV

Reliability and wisdom seem to go together. If I am reliable I can be depended upon. I find confidence in a reliable person. Confidence comes from two Latin words: con = with, and fideo = faith. Confidence means “with faith.” My faith grows around reliable people. People I can count on, people I can depend upon, people who are consistent, steadfast, and principle-based. These are people who have a core set of values and principles that are the same everyday and are not impacted by who they know, who they owe a favor to, or how they can benefit from a given situation. Are you a reliable person?

Ministry Resource: Baptist University of the Americas
One of the best answers to the 60% High School Drop Out Rate among Hispanic youth in Texas is Baptist University of the Americas. At BUA, students who don’t speak English, don’t posses a high school diploma, or don’t meet basic college entrance exam levels find a bridge at BUA to higher education. BUA offers a College Readiness Program to help address deficiencies, an Associate of Arts Degree in Cross-Cultural Studies, and a BA Degree in Biblical/Theological Studies. This fall we will be offering the BA degree entirely online for those who cannot move to San Antonio. See www.bua.edu for more information. Encourage youth and singles in your circle of influence that have potential for leadership to take the bridge at BUA.

Sanity Section: Summoned to Lead
One of the best little books I have read lately is Summoned to Lead by Leonard Sweet. Good people will be rewarded for what they say, but those who are deceitful are hungry for violence. Be careful what you say and protect your life. A careless talker destroys himself. No matter how much a lazy person may want something, he will never get it. A hard worker will get everything he wants. Honest people hate lies, but the words of wicked people are shameful and disgraceful."
Proverbs 13:1-5 TEV

God wants you to protect your life from self-destruction. There are a few things we can do to protect our lives: Battle against arrogance within us or a false sense of pride. If you can't admit you are wrong in a public context something is lacking in your life. Use your words wisely. Measure your words to avoid careless rambling. If you don't have a positive word to say about someone, don't say anything. Finally, be honest and pursue truth in your attitudes, actions, and words. Protect your life by standing on Christ the solid ground. All other ground is sinking sand.

Ministry Resource: Christian Stewardship Association
One of the best resources in the nation for learning how to raise financial resources for your ministry is the Christian Stewardship Association. I started attending the annual conference when I became president of BUA to learn about raising funds. I put what I learned into practice and we have grown a $700,000 budget to a $3.3 million dollar budget since 1999. On January 10, 2007 CSA will host "Stewardship and Philanthropy in the Hispanic Community" as a pre-conference seminar for Hispanic ministry leaders in Dallas, Texas at the Dallas Intercontinental Hotel. Cost is $105 per person. Scholarships and discounts may be available. Call Arnie Adkison at 800-721-1396 x 208 for more information. See www.stewardship.org for information about the entire conference set for January 10-13, 2007 in Dallas, Texas.

Sanity Section: Prayer
Sometimes the best way to relieve stress is to pray. Spend time with God and share your concerns with him. Equally important, share those concerns with a prayer network you can depend on. Friends who will seriously pray for you and your situation. You may want to set up a prayer journal to track God's faithfulness and his blessing in your life. Prayer will change you and conform you to the image of God.

Beginning July 3, 2006 Pan Dulce will be exclusively available at http://pandulcebyAlbert.blogspot.com/ rather than being sent via email.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Sanity Section – De-clutter Your Life

Wisdom Insight from Proverbs
“Anyone who loves knowledge wants to be told when he is wrong. It is stupid to hate being corrected. The Lord is pleased with good people, but condemns those who plan evil. Wickedness does not give security, but righteous people stand firm. A good wife is her husband’s pride and joy; but a wife who brings shame on her husband is like a cancer in his bones. Honest people will treat you fairly; the wicked only want to deceive you.”
Proverbs 12:1-5 TEV

Do you have anyone in your life that has your permission to confront you when you are wrong? My wife, my children, my brothers, my parents and in-laws, colleagues, and friends have that freedom with me. I may not like it at first but I know that these people would not bother if they did not truly love me. Arrogance is a false sense of pride and is a marker of the uncorrected person. Remaining teachable, approachable, and humble are marks of a mature leader. Even your toughest critic has a blessing for you. It might be disguised but it is there. Do good, be honest, serve God, serve others, and make plans with the interests of others in mind. Admit when you are wrong and apologize at the first opportunity.

Ministry Resource
Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Hardly a day goes by without a news report on this issue. What are your feelings on this topic? We could discuss this issue from a political, economic, legal, red-state or blue-state perspective but I am more interested in pursuing justice and mercy for those who come into my sphere of influence while respecting the law and reflecting on this issue missiologically. So I ask the question: “Does Jesus Still Have A Mission to the Poor?” See my white paper on this topic at www.bua.edu , click on “About BUA” and then click on “News Room.” You may also want to see the WOAI Podcast: Minutes of Faith on the front page of the BUA website entitled “Immigration Debate.” I was interviewed by Belkys Rodriguez, program director for Minutes of Faith at WOAI and BUA student. The white paper may give you some things to think about as you pray for President Bush and the US Congress.

Sanity Section
De-clutter your life. Each December I get into this mode of cleaning out stuff I no longer need. This year I decided to clear out my books both in my office and at home. I made three stacks: keep, sell, and donate. Sell? What do you mean sell? I found out that I could upload books I no longer wanted on www.amazon.com and found buyers who actually wanted my old books. I got my sons involved and we started a little family business selling my used books on the internet. We did not make lots of money but I was able to teach a business to my sons. They participated in the earnings too. Less is more. Look around to see what you can give away or sell. Less clutter reduces stress.

Beginning July 3, 2006 Pan Dulce will be exclusively available at http://pandulcebyAlbert.blogspot.com/ rather than being sent via email.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. People who are proud will soon be disgraced. It is wiser to be modest. If you are good, you are guided by honesty. People who can’t be trusted are destroyed by their own dishonesty. Riches will do you no good on the day you face death, but honesty can save your life. Honesty makes a good man’s life easier, but a wicked man will cause his own downfall.”
Proverbs 11:1-5 TEV

Honesty and integrity are the things that build character and wholeness. Integrity is related to the word “integer,” a whole number. We find our self-worth and affirmation in Christ through a relationship with him and we find wholeness to the degree that our character reflects his. Life is not harder than following Christ; it is, in fact, easier. Sleep comes easier to me when I am honest. Integrity reduces my stress and gives me less to worry about. The good thing about the truth is that you don’t have to keep track of it. Truth is the same truth everyday. Are you guided by honesty? Are you sure? If God were to conduct an honesty audit on you, would your financial transactions, your words, your attitudes, your actions, and your relationships pass the test?

Ministry Resource
The Leadership Summit. I learned early in my ministry and through clinical pastoral education that people tend to carry unresolved conflicts into all future relationships in an attempt to resolve them. People that have been hurt by others tend to serve that hurt up when given the opportunity. The next time you are served a load of hurt consider the possibility that you are experiencing the unresolved hurt of the person in front of you. Rather than react defensively, pray for those that persecute you and consider how you might bless them instead.
Beginning July 3, 2006 Pan Dulce will be exclusively available at http://pandulcebyAlbert.blogspot.com/ rather than being sent via email.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Wealth you get by dishonesty will do you no good, but honesty can save your life. The Lord will not let good people go hungry, but he will keep the wicked from getting what they want. Being lazy will make you poor, but hard work will make you rich. A sensible man gathers the crops when they are ready; it is a disgrace to sleep through the time of harvest.”
Proverbs 10:1-5 TEV

There are a few things that my parents taught me that would constantly make them proud of me. The first one was honesty, the second was a strong work ethic, and the third was a sense of stewardship of all of life: time, talents, gifts, abilities, etc. My dad used to say, son, you need to be honest, tell the truth all the time, and serve the Lord with all your heart. Do you want to make your father proud? Be wise. Do you want to cause your mother to grieve? Be foolish. She will grieve the loss of what she hoped you would become in Christ.

Honesty can save your life, really. Hard work but not workaholism is good for you. Take advantage of every opportunity, every conversation, every chance to do good, every invitation to provide a word of encouragement, and every minute you have to serve another person. Rather than live in disgrace, live in grace enjoying and giving all the gifts God has entrusted into your hands.

Ministry Resource
I don’t recall where I learned how to do a SWOT Anlaysis but it has become a very useful tool in the management of thoughts, complaints, agitations, creativity, and energy. Gather your leaders or constituents and ask them the following questions: What are the greatest strengths we have as a church/organization? What are the greatest weaknesses we face? What are some opportunities that we are missing? What are the things that threaten our future? From the feedback you get, and get it from everyone, compile a list of issue. Then prioritize those issues and assign them to a team to work on. These issues become your marching orders for the next 6 to 10 months. It is a way to help you listen to those you work with. It gives them the space and dignity to speak their minds without any possibility of reproof. Great leaders are also great listeners.

Sanity Section
What is happening to my 12 year old son? He is becoming a teenager? And I have been promoted into the uncool category. I am still a “larger than life person” for my 9 and 11 year olds but I have shrunk in the eyes of my teenager. Well, I am learning how to relate to my teen. Gus Reyes came up with a tool to help parents and teenagers. You might consider using if you have a mentoring relationship with a teen. It is called 30 Days. She has had an animal killed for a feast, mixed spices in the wine, and set the table. She has sent her servant girls to call out from the highest place in town: “Come in, ignorant people!” And to the foolish man she says, Come, eat my food and drink the wine that I have mixed. Leave the company of ignorant people, and live. Follow the way of knowledge.”
Proverbs 9:1-6 TEV

You know what is worse than not knowing? Not knowing what you don’t know. I have made it abundantly clear to my team and colleagues that I do not know everything and I certainly do not mind confessing that. That is why I brought bright people around me who probably know the things that I do not know. I need them for us to be effective. Ignorance is not knowing what you don’t know and insisting that you are not uninformed about that issue. Have you met the person that knows everything? I have. They know something about everything. They consider themselves to be an expert on every subject, even the subjects that you are just now learning about. What they do not know is that insecurity and low self-worth is shouting from every cell, every word, and every interaction with them.

Why don’t we start by admitting that no single person knows everything about anything? The truth, if is to be known, is that we are all learners who know a little bit about a few things. Even Paul admitted he did not know as much as he wanted to know. He said I want to know Christ in the power of the resurrection!

Ministry Resource
Ministers get terminated because they don’t know how to lead, they don’t know how to administer, and they don’t have good relational skills. Where do you stand on those competencies? What do you know about leadership, management, and relationships? What are you doing to learn about those subjects and how have you put your knowledge into practice? The folks that call you pastor or ministry leader expect you to lead, they expect you to manage, and they expect you to play well with others. If you are weak in those areas, be sure you find a person on your team that can complement your gifts. One of the best tools I have seen for leading change is Kotter’s 8-step model for leading organizations to change. See his book Leading Change.

Sanity Section
Try blessing children whether you have them in your household or interact with them at church or in some other social setting. At the beginning of the day or when they go to sleep. Pray or say a blessing over them. One of my favorite blessings goes something like this: May the Lord bless and keep you, may he cause his face to shine upon you and give you peace. Add a hug, a touch, and a kiss everyday and watch how those simple habits transform your relationships. I find that when I do this my kids feel special, they tend to want to hug back and say “Daddy, I love you!” Try it, today!

See www.bua.edu for bridges to leadership for the future.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Wisdom is calling out. Reason is making herself heard. On the hilltops near the road and at the crossroads she stands. At the entrance to the city, beside the gates, she calls: I appeal to you, mankind; I call to everyone on earth. Are you immature? Learn to be mature. Are you foolish? Learn to have sense.” Proverbs 8:1-5 TEV

Maturity often seems elusive, hard to reach. But, you know a mature follower of Christ when you see one. You also recognize immaturity when you see it as well. I am not talking about chronological age. I have seen senior adults demonstrate immaturity in Christ as well as younger people. Have you known a person who puts the needs of others before theirs? Have you seen the person who demonstrates humility, integrity, honesty, and truth-telling on a regular basis? Then you are blessed to know a mature follower of Christ.

Immature followers of Christ still let jealousy, envy, wrath, anger, malice, slander, and bitterness get the best of them. They try to conceal their inner poison and decorate their disposition with smiles, handshakes, and hugs but you know it is not real and eventually their actions prove immaturity. What can you do? Pray for them. Encourage them to walk worthy of the name of Christ. Challenge them privately if you have relational credibility with them.

Ministry Resource
What are you incompetent at doing that you insist on trying even though you and those around you know that you are not cutting it? Have you ever heard of the Strategic Coach (http://www.strategiccoach.com/ )? They have a system that helps you plot out the things that you are incompetent at doing, the things you are competent at doing, the things that you are excellent at doing, and the areas in which you have unique ability. By all means delegate your incompetent and competent areas to somebody else who loves doing it. What about the excellent?

We tend to want to stay there because we get strokes from doing those things. But you really need to move into the zone of Unique Ability. That is, what are you best at doing that only you can do for your ministry? Work at delegating even the excellent things and stick to your unique ability. You will see that over time your ministry will advance and you will get out of the way of other folks around you who have passion to do the things that you are incompetent, competent, and excellent at doing.

Sanity Section
Do you have a mentor or a person that serves as a sounding board for you? You don’t? Yikes. I have known some folks who have said they don’t need a mentor. That may be true but I have found that is wise to have people around you who are available to you to be sure you are keeping a balanced life, folks who can advise you, friends who love you enough to confront you. There are all kinds of mentoring relationships. Some are more formal and structured and others are less formal and less structured. Robert J. Clinton wrote a book called Mentoring: The Relationships You Need to Succeed in Life. Make it your goal to have 3 to 5 friends who will love you enough to hold you accountable and speak truth to you when you need it the most. This is the kind of community I would imagine the body of Christ could provide.

See www.bua.edu for bridges to leadership for the future.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Do what I say, and you will live. Be as careful to follow my teaching as you are to protect your eyes. Keep my teaching with you all the time; write it on your heart. Treat wisdom as your sister, and insight as your closest friend. They will keep you away from other men’s wives, from women with seductive words.” Proverbs 7:1-5 TEV

Do you remember the song “Be careful little eyes what you see?” You may not have ever learned that song while you were growing up. I learned it as a boy growing up in church. There is something powerful about images that we allow through our eyes into our soul. The best defense we have against sexual temptation is a regular intake of God’s word and healthy dose of common sense about our actions including our vision. The Psalmist says “Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee.” Wisdom comes from God, it comes from his word, and it comes from godly people who have spent a lifetime doing their best to live out God’s word and purpose in their lives.

God’s wisdom will keep me away from the spouse of another person. God’s wisdom will help me recognize seductive words when I hear them whether they come from men or women. God’s wisdom may also come from the lips of my spouse or a significant friend. Are you open to hearing God’s wisdom through your spouse or friend? If you are single do you have a significant person in your life whose words carry God’s wisdom? Siblings (i.e. sisters) are great accountability partners, especially if they are strong in the faith. Close friends of the same gender keep single men and women accountable as sexual temptation lurks around in an oversexed culture. Can you hear it? Are you listening?

Ministry Resource
How do you know if what you think is going well in your ministry is really going well? You may be in a ministry that provides opportunities to work through teams or other people much like Jethro recommended to Moses. If you don’t have teams you work through you may want to consider empowering other folks who are waiting to engage in your ministry. One of the ways I have found useful to help me know if things are going the way they should is the use of “Roundtables.” A roundtable is a meeting between me and the customers or end-users of my ministry.

In my case, I meet with students a couple of times a semester. I also meet with faculty from time to time. We gather around some snacks or lunch and then I ask them three questions: First, what are the best things going on at BUA? After a few moments of silence I usually say “Don’t everyone speak at the same time.” Once the silence is broken a brave soul will speak up. I have to remind those at the round table that I will not be attributing names to what is said and will only deal with issues that need improvement. After a round of kudos, I ask the second question: “If you were to change one or two things at BUA what would they be? By this time I have to ask them to take turns because most of those at the roundtable have something to say in response to the second question. The third question is: “What are you dreaming for BUA and for you experience here?”

Dreaming is free and it helps me to connect what we are planning with what they are hoping for or adjust our plans to connect with their dreams. The end result is that I have taken the pulse of the organization, identified critical issues that may need my attention immediately, and I have opened channels of communication for those committed to being at BUA. Use a roundtable; you may be surprised at what you find.

Sanity Section
Gratitude is a sure-fire way out of a pity party, especially your own. What do you do when you host a pity party and nobody shows up? Ouch! I have an idea. Write thank you notes. Write them everyday. Is there anybody in your life that you want to thank for something as simple as an affirmative word they spoke to you? Gratitude seems to keep me aware of all the blessings in my life that I cannot count. I am aware again of how blessed I am even in the midst of adversity. How about writing three thank you notes this week? Write the deacon who shows up every week. Write the youth teacher who is barely hanging in there asking themselves, why am I doing this? Write the donor who faithfully gives to your ministry? Write the pastor who diligently prepares a message from the Lord just for you. Write the Director of Missions to thank him for his leadership in your county. I think you get the point. Do it today. Do it now.

See www.bua.edu for bridges to leadership for the future.

Copyright 2006 Albert L. Have you been caught by your own words, trapped by your own promises? Well then, son, you are in that man’s power, but this is how to get out of it: hurry to him, and beg him to release you. Don’t let yourself go to sleep or even stop to rest. Get out of the trap like a bird or deer escaping from a hunter...” Proverbs 6:1-5 TEV

How often are we careless with our words even to the point of making promises that we cannot keep? I am very careful about what I promise I will do or what I commit to do through my words written or verbal. My words are binding, my commitment means something. Promise-breakers disqualify themselves from the privilege of enjoying the unmistakable, overwhelming, and penetrating presence, blessing and favor of the Lord on their lives and work. The Psalmist said it this way: “Lord, who may enter your Temple? Who may worship on Zion, your sacred Hill?...He (who) always does what he promises, no matter how much it may cost…” (Psalm 15:4b).

If you say you are going to do something, do it. If you say you are going to do something and realize it was a bad decision or realize it will cost you heavily to follow through, go and ask to be excused. If you are not excused from your commitment then learn the hard lesson and follow through. Leaders increase credibility when they imitate the Great Promise Keeper. Do people around you have confidence to stand on your promises?

Ministry Resource
Have you thought of doing a sermon series or bible study series related to the kind of person God uses? By all means, use it if it helps:
Series Title: The Kind of Person God Uses (Based on Psalm 15)
Week 1 Obedient Servants Psalm 15:1-2a TEV
Week 2 Truth Speakers Psalm 15:2b-3 TEV
Week 3 Promise Keepers Psalm 15:4 TEV
Week 4 Integrity Seekers Psalm 15:5
Week 5 Enjoying Security Psalm 15:5b

Each week you may want to highlight biographical sketches of one or more biblical characters who exemplified obedience, truth, promise-keeping, integrity, and finish up with a message on finding lasting security by becoming the kind of person God uses. This is the first time I provide a sermon series via Pan Dulce. If it was helpful, please let me know.

Sanity Section
I found a study recently that illustrated five factors that increase a person’s predisposition to a fatal heart-attack. Heart attacks affect men and women across the board. In fact, coronary heart disease, which causes heart attacks, is the leading cause of death for American women (see www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4786 ). I have become acutely aware of women’s health issues since my wife was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and chronic pain. Consequently, Belinda has been more focused on health issues including those that affect me.

As I reviewed the five factors that increased a person’s predisposition to a fatal heart-attack, the only factor I could change was my weight. So I began some new habits designed to reset my metabolism and have naturally dropped about 17 pounds over the last 6 weeks (Please email me if you are interested in learning more about the method I am using. No, I am not selling anything.) My goal is to level out at about 190 to 195 pounds. That is about right for me. My point? I want to be sure that my body lasts the mission that God has placed on my life.

My next step is to begin regular exercise and perhaps begin strength resistance training to maintain muscle mass. After age 40, I am told that we begin to lose a few pounds of muscle mass annually if we do not engage in strength resistance training involving weights. I am learning as I go. I hope this was helpful.

See www.bua.edu for bridges to leadership for the future.

Copyright 2006 Albert L.
